Hot Take: The DeepSeek Phenomenon: A New Accelerator for AI, Economies, and Markets?
What on earth just happened? Deepseek did.

Life moves fast. And no matter where you look, AI is having an impact, even if you can't see it. And that's why I'll occasionally write about it. Because it's affecting our lives, whether or not we like it, or want it. Case in point, DeepSeek is causing a tremendous stir in tech, business, and the stock market, raising questions about data security, innovation, and the future of AI.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this actually feels like war now https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/jan/27/deepseek-cyberattack-ai

Using cheap Nvidia chips and open-source code, DeepSeek’s powerful AI could inspire tons of copycats in the US and change the game. This might open up AI development to smaller players, leading to more innovation. However, it does bring up some worries about data security – so many tools could create vulnerabilities if they aren’t managed well.

People losing their minds over data security wrt Deepseek I understand, maybe. Also, they want to buy TikTok 🤔

This has huge economic consequences. DeepSeek and other open-source AI could make things more affordable and competitive, which is good news for everyone.

DeepSeek is going to be the catalyst for a wholesale revaluation of the tech sector. It’s going to be brutal and people review sunk costs that are probably going to be heavily discounted. That’s the Trojan horse here.

But this could be bad news for the stock market, especially big tech companies that use their own AI. That big drop in NVIDIA’s value shows how fast the AI market can change. If DeepSeek’s approach gains traction, it could challenge the dominance of established players, much like BYD disrupted Tesla’s electric vehicle stronghold.

NVIDIA. No other single company has ever lost so much in value in one day.

Looking ahead, the focus should be on how DeepSeek’s model influences global AI development and geopolitical dynamics. Taiwanese chips and possible tariffs make things even more complicated—it’s all about tech and trade policy. Additionally, as tech giants face scrutiny over their AI investments, the question arises: has the AI gold rush been a wise allocation of resources, or are we witnessing a bubble in the making? Or even bursting?

And there is now this. It’s bonkers time: https://uk.pcmag.com/computers-electronics/156458/trump-to-tariff-chips-made-in-taiwan-targeting-tsmc

In the coming days, watch for how DeepSeek’s strategy unfolds, the response from major tech players, and the broader implications for AI innovation, economic growth, and market stability. AI’s still developing, but DeepSeek is a fundamental change, and things are about to get interesting.

Tech giants have been depending HEAVILY on AI. And now serious people are asking if this has all been an incredible waste of money #deepseek
